Portugal 1 vs Morocco 0
Cristiano Ronaldo found the net for the 4th time this tournament.
This time he struck with his head off of a corner. After a clever maneuver to create space between himself and his defender, he dove and drilled the ball into the low corner of the net.
Portugal couldn’t find any more success finding the net however. Instead, Morocco created several chances in front of goal, but capitalized on none.
Morocco is eliminated from the tournament after just 2 games.
Portugal sits atop the group with 4 points, tied with Spain. They play Iran next, who after recent performances has some believing they could steal points against Ronaldo’s Portuguese side.
Uruguay 1 vs Saudi Arabia 0
Luis Suarez got on the score sheet for the first time this tournament to give Uruguay it’s 2nd one goal victory.
It came with a bit of luck, though. A terribly defended corner left Suarez wide open in the middle of the box where he slotted home the eventual winner.
Many believed Uruguay would win by a wider margin than they did after Russia manhandled the Saudi’s on opening night. However, the Saudi’s battled and nearly came up with a result.
Unfortunately, they failed and are eliminated from the tournament.
Uruguay now 2-0, has secured a spot in the final 16.
Spain 1 vs Iran 0
The day finished with yet another 1-0 victory for the favorite.
Despite a flurry of chances, over 70% possession, and a relentless attack, Spain struggled to a 1-0 win. The game’s only goal came off of a fortunate deflection from Diego Costa’s shin in the 2nd half.
Iran exploded in celebration after they thought they had tied the game just minutes after conceding. However, It was called back for offsides, which video replay confirmed.
It was an ugly game, but mostly effective for the Iranians. It didn’t get them a result this time, but they are still alive heading to their group stage finale against Portugal. Iran sits 3rd in the group, just 1 point behind the leaders.
Spain is one of those leaders. They’re deadlocked with Portugal right now and the final day of the group stage will have to be the final decider. Spain takes on a heart broken Morocco side.
