Host’s Russia kicked off the World Cup by showing the world they are no pushover.
A 5-0 swamping of Saudi Arabia was by far the most convincing victory of the first round of group stage matches.
However Saudi Arabia is possibly the worst team in the tournament.
Today the Russians host their second match of group play.
Egypt, while not a powerhouse, is a competent side with a world class striker in Mohammad Salah.
Russia can cement their spot in the Round of 16 if they pull off another victory against the Egyptians.
The visitors are coming off a heartbreaking loss against Uruguay in their first match. The game was lost on an 89th minute free kick goal by Uruguay’s Gimènez.
Star Mo Salah didn’t play as he is still nursing a shoulder injury.
Now a desperate African side squares off with a confident host. There is still doubt surrounding the Russian national side- FIFA’s rankings have them as the lowest in the tournament.
FIFA rankings are virtually meaningless, though. With a win today, Russia has a chance to make it deep into the tournament.
You can bet that the home crowd will rally around their now confident team. If Russia gets on the board early, there’s a chance they roll past Egypt like they did against the Saudi’s.
Prediction: Russia win 2-1
